In a significant move impacting over a million vehicles in the U.S., Stellantis has initiated a recall due to a defect in rear-view camera functionality. This recall aims to address safety concerns that could potentially lead to an increased risk of accidents. Here’s what fleet managers need to know about the recall and how it might affect their operations.
Stellantis has recalled various models, including Chrysler Pacificas, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Durangos, Ram Promasters, Jeep Compasses, Wagoneers, and Grand Wagoneers. The vehicles affected span model years 2021 to 2023. The recall stems from a radio software issue that can cause the rear-view camera image to fail to display, thus compromising driver visibility and safety.
Federal regulators highlighted that the problem arises from radio software that may stop displaying the rear-view camera’s image. This malfunction reduces rear visibility, which is critical for preventing back-over accidents and ensuring overall safety during reverse maneuvers.
Stellantis has already implemented over-the-air software updates for more than 735,000 affected vehicles. For the remaining vehicles, the company is pursuing further updates. Vehicle owners will see a request to accept the update on their media screens. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed that dealers will provide the necessary software updates at no cost to the owners.
For fleet managers, this recall highlights the importance of maintaining up-to-date software and monitoring recall notices. Ensuring that all vehicles in the fleet receive the necessary updates promptly can prevent potential safety hazards and maintain operational efficiency.
Fleet managers should:
• Check if any vehicles in their fleet are affected by this recall.
• Ensure that the software updates are installed as soon as they are available.
• Stay in communication with Stellantis representatives or dealers to track the progress of these updates.
Stellantis’ recall of over a million vehicles due to rear-view camera issues underscores the critical nature of vehicle software in maintaining safety standards. By staying informed and proactive, fleet managers can mitigate risks and ensure the safety and efficiency of their operations.
