Hybrids, Not EVs. Dominating Electrified Vehicle Market

Despite the attention given toelectric vehicles, hybrid vehicles are more popular among consumer shoppers concerned about the environment. Read on to learn more about the electrified vehicle market and how it may impact your transition to electric fleet vehicles.

  • About a quarter of all new-vehicle shoppers (for use by consumers, not businesses) considered an electrified vehicle in the first quarter of 2023.
  • Of the Top 10 most-shopped electrified vehicles, 8 were hybrids and half of the hybrids were Toyota models.
  • The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid was the most-shopped electrified vehicle, followed by the Honda CR-V Hybrid and the Ford Maverick Hybrid.
  • Only two full EVs were on the Top 10 most-shopped list: the Tesla Model Y and the Chevrolet Bolt.
  • The Tesla Model 3 fell off the Top 10 list, but Tesla still had a record quarter for sales.

As a business owner, you want to be aware of the following especially:

  • The popularity of hybrid vehicles suggests that there is a strong demand for fuel-efficient, more sustainable work vehicles.
  • The fact that the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the most-shopped electrified vehicle shows that Toyota is a leader in this segment.
  • The inclusion of the Ford Maverick Hybrid on the Top 10 list shows that there is also demand for affordable hybrid vehicles that could be utilized by business fleets.
  • The fact that only two full EVs made the Top 10 list suggests that there is still some hesitation among consumers to adopt fully electric vehicles.  Businesses have the same concerns.  Commercial customers looking to transition to more sustainable work vehicles, it seems a hybrid would make a great choice and eliinate risks associated with all- electric vehicles.
